Key Improvements in X-Ways Forensics v21.3:
Full Unicode Support in Metadata Blocks:
The program now fully supports Unicode characters within XMP metadata blocks, improving compatibility and ensuring that metadata from international sources is preserved accurately.
Enhanced Color Identification:
A new feature allows for the detection of various shades of colors, such as aquamarine, khaki, and fuchsia, providing more descriptive visual insights into picture content. These shades can be prefixed with “Color: ” for consistency in reporting.
Face Detection Enhancements:
Face recognition workflows were streamlined by making bounding box review optional if faces are already marked in a directory’s labels file. This change saves time in environments where known face data is pre-defined.
Improved RAID Handling:
For MD RAID configurations, container partitions are now automatically included when adding physical storage devices. This ensures that RAID setups remain intact and accessible upon re-opening cases, simplifying complex storage scenarios.
Optimized Archive and Email Handling:
Updates addressed rare exceptions when copying files from file archives and extracting attachments from certain email formats. These fixes contribute to a smoother user experience when dealing with large evidence collections.
Enhanced Duplication and Snapshot Management:
“Find duplicates in list” now more reliably identifies all duplicates, even with additional criteria. Volume snapshot backups are automatically deleted when an evidence object is removed, and older snapshots can be imported seamlessly from earlier case versions.
Refinements in Path Length and Compatibility:
The Recover/Copy command now supports paths up to 1023 characters long, accommodating more complex directory structures and long file names. Compatibility improvements with encrypted RAR and 7z archives, as well as extended timestamp interpretation for zip archives, were also included.
User Interface and Workflow Enhancements:
Minor user interface adjustments—such as consistent selection of hash sets for automated command line operations and revised cache handling for file archives—help streamline workflows and reduce errors.
